Credit Hour Definition (See College Catalog)

Miller College believes that it is important to maximize the use of instructional time by engaging students in meaningful learning experiences. Miller College follows The Carnegie Unit or Carnegie hours format for calculating instructional time.  Credit hours are defined by:

-the number of hours in which a course is taught

-the number of instructional hours/units

-student contact hours with the instructor

 Evidence:

Instructional time must be followed using the guidelines as described below:

Instructional Time: A Miller College semester is a fifteen (15) week term.

The semester may vary (Fall and Spring are 15 weeks in length, Summer I & II are 8 weeks in length).  Miller College courses range from 1-3 semester hours and should be calculated using 750 minutes for each semester hour course: 1SH= 750 minutes, 2 SH = 1,500 minutes, 3 SH = 2, 250 minutes.

Fall and Spring: 15 weeks (one class per week) X 50 minute per sessions X 3 semester hour course = 2,250 minutes (2 hrs. 30 min) or 2,250 minutes= 15 wks. X 50 min hr. X 3 SH (2 hrs.  30 min)

Summer: 2,250 minutes = 8 weeks with two classes per week/15 sessions X 50 min hr. X 3 SH requires (2 hrs. and 30 min)

Homework: The College Catalog lists the total class hours required per semester for each course.  In addition to the previous requirement of the course lecture time, a minimum of two hours of homework (ex. assignments, reading, researching) for each semester hour is also required.
