4.A.5 The institution maintains specialized accreditation as appropriate to its educational purposes.

In November 2007, the Michigan State Board of Education approved a proposal from the Superintendent of Public Instruction to require all approved teacher preparation institutions operating in Michigan to receive national accreditation through either National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) or Teacher Education Accreditation Council (TEAC) by December 31, 2013 or within 5 years of achieving Probationary Approval by the State Board. Miller College has elected to pursue national accreditation through TEAC, as this route was selected by Aquinas College, our original mentor institution, as well as most private teacher preparation institutions in Michigan. Miller College achieved Probationary Approval in October 2009, and thus is on a timeline for achieving national accreditation through TEAC in 2014. Miller College applied for and received Candidate membership in TEAC in 2010, the first step for initiating the accreditation process. Candidate membership has been maintained through the 2011-2012 academic year, and will continue through 2012-13 and 2013-14, during which academic year Miller College anticipates completing a TEAC audit and achieving initial accreditation.

Evidence:

In 2011, the Nursing Program of Miller College received Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) Accreditation.  CCNE is acknowledged by the U.S. Secretary of Education as a nationally recognized accrediting agency for baccalaureate and graduate degree programs in nursing.  They are an arm of American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN).  The Commission surveys and collects data on institutional and program characteristics including enrollment and graduation data.  Their focus is to stimulate continuous quality improvement in nursing programs.  “CCNE serves the public interest by assessing and identifying programs that engage in effective education practices” (taken from their handbook on accreditation).

This accreditation is important to Miller College as it reflects the high quality of education that is provided to our nursing students and is recognized by employers as a program that is in accordance with many standards of good educational practices.
