4C.1 The institution has defined goals for student retention, persistence, and completion that are ambitious but attainable and appropriate to its mission, student populations, and educational offerings.

Miller College has a defined goal for retention that is ambitious but attainable and appropriate to its mission, student population, and educational offerings. Within the strategic plan dated 2009 the College set a goal to increase the student retention rate to 90%. The retention rate as it was defined in the strategic plan of 2009, is better described as a persistence rate since Miller College does not have any first-time at any institution students. All of the students at Miller College are transfer students.

Miller College is defining the College retention rate as those students who are first-time students at Miller College during that particular fall semester who enroll in courses the following fall semester. For example Miller College’s retention rate for Fall 2011 is 45%. Miller College reviewed the retention rate and set a more realistic goal for the Fall 2012 reporting period.

Miller College is defining the College’s persistence rate as those students who are enrolled within a semester and continue onto the next semester with the exception of the summer semester. For example Miller College’s persistence rate from Fall 2011 to Spring of 2012 was 89%. Miller College takes into consideration within the persistence rate those students who transfer back to Kellogg Community College to fulfill the requirements within the student’s program. Miller College is setting the goal to increase the persistence rate by 1% and then maintain the persistence rate of 90%.

Miller College is defining the College’s graduate/completion rate as a cohort of students who became first-time students at Miller College during the fall semester and complete their program prior to six years. Miller College will continue to break out groups from two to six years to analyze when students complete their program of study. At this time Miller College has not had enough graduating cohort groups to set a completion/graduation rate that is attainable and appropriate.
