1. A.1 – The mission statement is developed through a process suited to the nature and culture of the institution and adopted by the governing board.
The Miller College Board of Trustees is comprised of members from the education, philanthropy and business communities, one of whom is also a member of the original Miller College Steering Committee. The major actions of the Miller College Board of Trustees include: employment of the President and all faculty and staff; approving budgets that include appropriations for staff and faculty development; approving all programs and significant changes in programs of study; and, approving all curricula in each program of study ( See Miller College Policy Manual (176 KB, PDF)).
The Mission Statement, developed by the founders, employees, board members, and constituent groups, is understood and supported by all members of the organization. The Miller College Board of Trustees understands and supports the mission by establishing committees and policies to carry out the mission. The College Policy Manual and Faculty Handbook are based on the mission and provide guidance for all staff in support of the mission (See Miller College Policy Manual, Section III( (176 KB, PDF)). The Miller College Board of Trustees has established a Finance Committee that is responsible for the oversight of the institution’s finances. The Board Treasurer chairs this committee and the Miller College Executive Director of Finance represents the College. This committee reviews and approves all financial documents including the College budget and external audits.
Miller College values a life of learning and demonstrates such commitment in the statements of mission and the learning outcomes of each school of the College. The College believes that learning should take place beyond the classroom and as such, strives to promote a culture of global awareness and service learning. The statements of the mission of the College, the learning outcomes of each school of the College (See Miller College Catalog and Student Handbook) and the Miller College Service Learning Policy ( See Miller College Catalog – General Education Requirements).
The actions of the Board that demonstrate commitment to a life of learning began with hiring administrators, faculty and staff whose backgrounds contain a history of continual learning and, who in themselves, are models of this value. Many of the staff come from careers in business, education, government, health care and the military, and are now in the role of college educators (See Faculty and Staff Resumes). This value further emerges through the courses developed by faculty. Syllabi connect components of instruction and assessment to the working world and to the world of cultural growth and appreciation (See Miller College Catalog – Philosophy Statement).
