Challenge XIV: Credentials of Staff

Response:

Miller College seeks faculty who have an earned doctorate. The job posting for each faculty position in the College lists qualifications as follows:

Qualifications (required to be considered for position):

  • A Ph.D./Ed.D. is preferred. A Master’s degree plus 18 graduate hours will be considered.
  • Minimum of three years teaching experience (College/University)
  • Experience with curriculum development
  • As part of the hiring process for an instructor at The Robert B. Miller College, we require a teaching/learning demonstration

Three full-time faculty members have terminal degrees (Dr. John Rasmussen, Dr. Sean Kottke, Dr. Ohm) all others have master’s degrees+. Now that Miller College is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission and a member of The North Central Association and as the college continues to grow, it will be able to recruit, retain and attract more faculty members with terminal degrees.

Miller College faculty members continue to increase their knowledge of computers and technology by participating in training sessions dealing with new technology and upgrades. As evidenced in the syllabi, faculty members integrate the use of technology into their teaching. At the beginning of the Fall and Spring Semesters, faculty members participate in Orientation/Workshops in Blackboard, On-line course format. The faculty members at Miller College are knowledgeable of current practices and use technology extensively within each course. They use discussion boards through Blackboard to communicate with students in their courses. They use the Internet, Doc Cam, and the Microsoft Office Package (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Publisher) to help students research topics.

A very important component of the College Mission is the “understanding of a globally-oriented world.” As part of the academic responsibilities, faculty members are responsible for striving to speak with accuracy and with respect for the rights and responsibility of others. Miller College promotes learning by fostering and supporting inquiry, creativity, practice, and social responsibility in ways consistent with its mission.
