Martha Alling, a BSN student at Miller College, recently presented her concept for a new Cancer Support Group to the to the Community Cancer Center of the Community Health Center of Branch County in Coldwater, Michigan. Mrs. Alling researched and organized her idea as part of her studies in the Community Health course at the College.
“The Community Health classroom assignment involves the student choosing a group within the community that may need to access services they are not yet aware of. The student researches those resources and develops a presentation to educate the chosen group on those resources,” said course instructor, Deb Buck.
Martha reached out to marketing personnel at the Community Health Center of Branch County and was directed to Chris Kelly, Cancer Center Director, who encouraged her to research the steps involved to form a support group for area cancer patients. Martha began her study, which included attending other cancer center support group meetings to gain better information and perspective. In April, she presented her findings to Mr. Kelly and others. The project was very well received and thanks to Martha’s efforts a new support group is in the works for summer, 2012.
Mr. Kelly stated, "We did community surveys and found there was a lot of interest in a cancer support group in our area. Martha has been instrumental in helping us get this off of the ground; I am excited to bring this support to the Coldwater community.”
