Miller College held an Instructional Seminar for 30+ teachers over the summer. The purpose of the seminar was to help teachers feel more comfortable with the creative writing and illustration associated with the Children's Project.
Elizabeth Kerlikowske and Peter Williams, both instructors at Kellogg Community College, lead the discussions.
Elizabeth Kerlikowske teaches English at Kellogg Community College, which includes Creative Writing, Mass Media, Children's Literature, American Literature, African-American Literature, Introduction to Literature, and writing classes. She also periodically advises the Bruin newspaper and Mosaic, the literary magazine. In her spare time, she is president of Friends of Poetry in Kalamazoo, an organization that sponsors the annual Poems That Ate Our Ears contest for children, hosts a reading series at the Kalamazoo Public Library, and paints murals of poems on downtown building legall. Her fifth book of poems, Dominant Hand, was published by Mayapple Press last year. Teaching is the most exhilarating intellectual experience she can have because she witnesses the lightbulbs go on.
Peter Williams has taught art at Kellogg Community College for 17 years. In addition to his teaching, he is an active artist and has exhibited his paintings, collages and ceramics in numerous regional, state, and national shows. Through KCC, the Art Center of Battle Creek and other local civic groups he has worked with children, parents, and teachers on several K-12 art projects. A Michigan native, he holds an MFA degree from Florida State University.
